The city of Valencia has a unique historic city center with more than 2,000 years of history to discover. This is really a long time, and yes, a lot of things happened during those 2,000 years! The different influences of previous cultures are still visible in the beautiful center of Valencia and we will enjoy the magic of the city on this very special bike tour.
The founders of the city were the Romans, who settled in Valencia in 138 BC. They named the place “Valentia” which means “bravery”. When we bike through the narrow streets of the city, you will agree that there couldn’t be a better name for this energetic and vital city! It vibrates with life and vitality, people love to eat and drink outside and enjoy the spectacular views of this very historic place on earth, surrounded by buildings that have seen a lot of history. While the Romans reigned, the city was only a fraction of what it is now, but we can still admire some villas on our Valencia bike tour, which used to be the homes of the Roman aristocracy.
The Visigoths followed the Romans and after them came the Moors. They added their culture to the city; their artistic influences and their cuisine are still tangible in the old town of Valencia. In 1238, King Jaime I, who has his very own statue, chased away the Moors and conquered Valencia.
Pelican Bike will show you all the special places formed by history on this Valencia bike tour. We will see an example of excellent gothic architecture, the Serranos Gate (Porta dels Serrans). Its construction began in 1392 and it was built to protect the city from intruders. In 1865, the city walls were knocked down, but the Serranos Gate was saved and used as a prison. But that gate won’t hold us prisoners, since we still have a lot to discover while we bike through Valencia. Right in the heart of the old city of Valencia, we will find the charming Plaza de la Virgen, which was constructed by the Romans who first inhabited the city. It is surrounded by Valencia’s most symbolic buildings, such as the Cathedral, the Basilica de la Virgen de los Desamparados and the Palace of the Generalitat. With the picturesque fountain in the middle of the square, this is the perfect place to have a break and enjoy the atmosphere during our Valencia bike tour. Another gem of the city is the Central Market and Pelican Bike will take you to this busy beautiful building. The Central Market in Valencia covers more than 8,000 square meters, which makes it one of the largest in Europe. Beautifully colored window panels let the light in and reveal the vendors who are selling food, souvenirs and other useful and sometimes less useful goods. These are only examples of the variety that the old city of Valencia has to offer.
Valencia on bike has so much more to offer, and especially at night. In the dark, the sparkling lights of Valencia, Spain, are even more visible and create a cozy and magic environment that you will love! Valencia by night has a lot to offer, and you will see that the beautiful historic buildings are very expressive when the night has fallen. If you have any special wishes, please let us know. Pelican Bike is glad to customize this tour according to your needs. See you for a breath-taking bike tour in the beautiful historic city center of Valencia!
