The modern history of graffiti dates back to the 1960’s, in New York. The first graffiti artists were living and painting in the busy streets of the city centre. They got inspired by hip-hop music and expressed themselves with signatures, also called Tagging.

One of the first graffiti artists expressed himself with the signature ‘TAKI 183’. This artist worked as a messenger in New York and painted his signature on all the places where he delivered documents and packages. His popularity increased rapidly and especially young people started to imitate him, constantly looking for new, difficult places to leave their own signature. Perhaps the name TAKER, used for the thick permanent ink markers used by graffiti artists, has its origins in this first known graffiti firm: TAKI 183.
