Valencia Old Town Bike Tour
The city of Valencia has a unique historic centre with more than 2,000 years of history to discover. This may sound like a long time, but a lot of things happened during those 2,000 years! The different influences of previous cultures are still visible in the beautiful centre of Valencia, and we are going to enjoy the magic of the city on this special bike tour.
The founders of the city were the Romans, who settled in Valencia in 138 BC. They named the place "Valentia", derived from the word "bravery". When we cycle through the narrow streets of the city, you will realise that there could not be a better name for this energetic and vital city. Valencia breathes life and vitality; people love to eat and drink outdoors whilst enjoying the spectacular views of this historic city. In this city you will be surrounded by buildings that have seen the passing of centuries. When the Romans reigned, the city was only a fraction of what it is now. But we can still admire a few villas on our Valencia bike tour, which used to be the homes of the Roman aristocracy.
The Visigoths followed the Romans, after them came the Arabs and their gastronomy. They brought their culture to the city; its artistic influences are still visible in the old town of Valencia. In 1238, King Jaime I, who has his own statue, conquered Valencia. From then on, Valencia has been a Christian city, but with strong Roman, Visigothic and Arab roots.
Why is the old town of Valencia so charming?
Pelican Bikes will take you on an iconic bike tour. We will see an example of excellent Gothic architecture, being the Puerta de Serranos. Its construction began in 1392 and was built to protect the city. In 1865, the city walls were torn down, but the Puerta de Serranos was saved and used as a prison. Do not worry, this gate will not make us prisoners! We have much more to discover whilst touring through Valencia by bicycle. In the heart of the old town of Valencia, we will find the charming Plaza de la Virgen. This square was built by the Romans, who inhabited the city at first. It is surrounded by the most symbolic buildings of Valencia, such as the Cathedral, the Basilica of the Virgen de los Desamparados and the Palacio de la Generalitat. With the picturesque fountain in the centre of the square, this the perfect place to pause for a moment, whilst enjoying the atmosphere of the square. Another highlight of the city is the Central Market. Pelican Bikes will be more than happy to take you to this beautiful and busy building. The Central Market of Valencia covers more than 8,000 square meters, making it one of the largest markets in Europe. Beautifully coloured windowpanes let the sunlight through and will reveal Valencians selling food, souvenirs and other useful goods. These are just a few examples of the variety that Valencia's old town has to offer.
